Meet the Team

Woman owned, to support all people on all paths.

Katherine D. Van Marter

Katherine was born and raised outside Atlanta, Georgia. She attended Georgia State University, graduating with degrees in political science and public policy. After, she relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana where she attended Tulane University, and received her M.S., as well as her Juris Doctor.

Katherine began her practice in Louisiana as a policy fellow analyzing coastal restoration finance, climate adaptation policy, and private water and mineral rights in the Mississippi River Delta region. A passion of hers, she continues to serve on the Advisory Board of the Tulane Institute on Water Resources Law & Policy. She later moved to Asheville to be closer to family and pursue a more traditional legal career, litigating in federal court and handling both residential and commercial real estate transactions before forming her own firm.

Katherine combines a strong work ethic and organized mind with a drive to find solutions for even the most complex issues, providing clients with seamless service and advocacy in transactional matters. She is admitted to practice in New York, North Carolina, and the U.S. District Court for the Western District of North Carolina. Active in our community, she is a member of the Buncombe County Bar Association, serving on its Executive Committee as Chair of the CLE committee, serves on the Board of the Asheville Buncombe County Land Trust.

Away from work, Katherine takes full advantage of all the outdoor activities that Western North Carolina has to offer with her pups, Candler and Gerald, and enjoys traveling, tunes, and tacos.

Alexander R.W. Paschal, or “Alex,” as he is known, was born and raised in Asheville, and maintains deep familial ties and connections to Buncombe County and the entire state of North Carolina. Alex’s fondness for real property and the natural world began at a young age while exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina with his father. He now works with Van Marter Law focusing primarily on real property law, including residential and commercial real estate transactions, land use, and zoning. He also helps our clients with ancillary estate administration.

Alex’s educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in political science and history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which he obtained in 2016. Afterwards, he embarked on the “Journey of Hope,” where he biked over 4,000 miles from Seattle to Washington, D.C. to spread awareness and raise money for people with disabilities. Alex then moved to Raleigh in 2017 to pursue his Juris Doctor from Campbell University—Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law, where he served as president of the Student Federal Bar Association.

Alex returned to his beloved Asheville in 2020 and has since practiced real estate law in Western North Carolina. He is passionate about serving the local community, currently serving as Chairman of the Young Lawyer’s Division of the Buncombe County Bar. When not working, he enjoys utilizing his knowledge of geography and music trivia, often putting these skills to the test at breweries across Asheville.

Bryant Newby

Bryant was born and raised in South Carolina where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Coastal Carolina University. He later went on to earn a Juris Doctor degree from the Charleston School of Law. In 2013 an opportunity to work in the outdoor industry brought him to Asheville where he has lived since. After working in operations management for several years, he has decided to move back into the legal field and joined the team at Van Marter Law in 2021 as a paralegal. He is working primarily as a title paralegal and assists in other matters as needed.

Bryant enjoys spending time with his family, hiking, exploring the mountains of western North Carolina, traveling to new places.

Rebekah Reed

Rebekah is an Asheville transplant that has decided to set up roots after moving here, on a whim, a little over three years ago. Having worked in the Real Estate industry in both Virginia and North Carolina, spanning over 12 years, she is excited to bring her knowledge and experience to the Van Marter team.

When she is not at the office she enjoys spending time with friends and making sure her dog, Finn, is living his best life. Whether hiking, swimming, paddle boarding or just enjoying the local parks. Some of her hobbies include gardening, reading, cooking and crafts.
